Travelling to Newcastle
Train from Sydney
Public transport can be paid for by tapping on and off with your Visa/Mastercard. There is no need for a dedicated Opal card. The maximum daily cost for public transport is approximately AU$18, unless you board / alight at Sydney airport, in which case there is an additional fee of approximately AU$17.
The train to Newcastle Interchange departs from Central station one or two times per hour and takes between 2:30 and 3:00, depending on the number of stops. You can also catch the metro to Epping and join the train there. On the usual schedule, all trains stop at Central, Epping, and Newcastle Interchange. Google maps has some difficulty displaying all of these trains, so it may be worth checking times on TransportNSW, which is also reliably updated with engineering works, disruptions, etc.
Once you arrive at Newcastle Interchange, you can change to the Light Rail and ride to the Civic stop to get to the Newcastle City campus. The Light Rail runs every 8 minutes throughout the working day and takes about 5 minutes.
Flights to Newcastle
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is the main international airport in Sydney. It has very good train connectivity to Central station, whence regular trains run to Newcastle.
Newcastle Airport has domestic flights, mostly from Melbourne and Brisbane. It is a small airport, approximately 20km from the city. Bus 130 runs approximately once per hour from the airport to Newcastle Interchange. The bus journey takes approximately an hour. An Uber or taxi to Central Newcastle takes approximately 25 minutes.
